Master thesis

At the end of the first semester, the faculty members inform about the number of graduate students they can employ and define the subjects of the diplomas. The maximum number of places is three (3) people per teacher (except exceptions).

After the end of the 1st semester exams, each student submits three supervisor choices (in order of preference). The director of the PMS and in collaboration with the faculty members determines the supervisors, taking into account: a) the progress of the students since the postgraduate student with the highest score (first semester) has the first opportunity to choose the supervisor he wishes b) a necessary condition for taking on the duties of supervising a diploma course is that the supervisor accepts the student.

The student then submits an application to the Department’s secretariat in which the proposed title of his thesis, the supervisor and the Three-Member Examining Committee (including the supervisor) are indicated. The members of the Three-member Examining Committee must have the same or related scientific specialty as the subject of the P.M.S. The validation of the procedure is done by the General Assembly of the Department and is completed by the end of the second semester.

For the special group of Postgraduate students, who are employed in Industry, they should, upon registration, have ensured the possibility of preparing their diploma thesis in their professional field. More specifically, these students prepare their thesis, under the supervision of a faculty member (from the PMS teachers) and a person in charge (holder of a master’s degree or doctorate) from their workplace. The other two members of the three-member committee are appointed as defined by the law on postgraduate studies.

During the preparation of the Master’s Thesis and in exceptional cases, it is possible to replace the supervisor or a member of the Three-member Examination Committee (after a decision of the Assembly of the relevant Department) if there is an objective weakness or an important reason (e.g. resignation, illness etc.).

Completion of the preparation and writing of the master’s thesis takes place after the end of the second semester. However, it is possible to use the right of the student to extend his studies after his application to the Coordinating Committee and after a reasoned decision by the General Assembly of the Department. The extension of studies in accordance with the regulation can be granted for up to one year while the total duration of studies is set at six (6) semesters including the three (3) semesters of normal study.

Details of writing the thesis as well as rules of Academic and research ethics are detailed in the Regulation on Drafting and Writing of a Diplomatic Thesis and in the Research Ethics Regulation respectively.

After the completion of the thesis, the oral presentation of the work and the examination by the three-member examination committee follow. The presentation by the student is supported in front of an audience which is invited to attend (after invitation) on a specific date and place defined by the S.E.
